What influences teachers and students to use technology in the classroom?
Teachers and students use technology in the classroom as a means to facilitate learning. What does that mean, though? Well, it could be something as simple as a chalkboard, or a desk designed for left-handed students. It could also be something as complex as a virtual reality classroom, where students wouldn't even have to leave their own homes to participate in a learning environment. Basically, students and teachers are drawn to and use technologies to make learning and disseminating information more accessible.
ISTE Standards
An ISTE standard that is meaningful to me would definitely have to be Digital Citizenry for students. I spend a lot of time online, whether for academic, professional, or personal purposes. During my forays into the wild west that is the World Wide Web, I have come to understand just how important it is to be a good digital citizen. Understanding the implications and permanence of online interactions, and treating each other with respect on the internet is as important to me as being a good citizen in the real world, and I believe it is an important ideal to impart upon youth.
A standard that seems to be a little outside my skill set would have to be Innovative Design. I grasp the concept, that being, using technologies to create and execute new techniques. However, I think that the technologies that can help facilitate that kind of knowledge still have some time to mature and become more sophisticated, so that there can be more and more creative solutions being presented.
Digital Natives
I would have to largely agree with the use of the term "Digital Native" to describe today's youth. A "Digital Native" is used to describe how younger generations have access to technologies that their parents are only now just getting used to. Growing up with this tech, these new users are becoming incredibly sophisticated very quickly.
I have certainly seen differences in how my teachers use technology versus how I use technology. Thankfully, many have been fairly computer literate, though I have had cases where a teacher prefers the old fashioned lecture on the board, with minimal use of digital resources. Examples include a teacher not using Canvas or other similar software to provide assignment information, poorly organized online classes, and leaving a mouse cursor in the center of the screen while a video is playing. These kinds of things can have a major impact on the learning experience. A poorly organized online classroom may lead to a student missing potential due dates and assignments.
In the future, I expect that the use of technology in classrooms will be super streamlines, as the digital natives of today fill the roles of both the educator and the students.
I am really glad that you are consider yourself as a digital citizen. It is not an easy job and it should be one of the bigger goals of educating our next generation. BTW, I like the way you put brief titles of each section. Perhaps you can think of a overarching theme for them as the bigger title (hint: the title topic of each week. It is on the course calendar).
