GICA Blog 1: Blog Setup

Hello! My name is Johnny and I am happy to be a member of this class and of this world that we inhabit. My hobbies include reading, writing, playing video games and making friends. This is my first semester at the Institution, and I'll be honest I'm a little nervous, but I work and thrive best in new situations. I very much look forward to what this class has in store.

I have used all different kinds of educational technologies in class. My earliest memories of educational tech come from when I was in elementary school, and my teachers used those old fashioned projectors where you had to write on a transparent sheet of plastic with a marker and the light was projected onto a wall. No dedicated screens yet! Then moving on up though my schooling, tech became more and more sophisticated. Bulky laptops became sleek tablets, and whiteboards became interactive screens.

I hope to learn about all sorts of technologies, strategies and software that will help me provide the best possible learning environment for my future students! I'm already a huge tech geek, so this transition seems pretty natural to me. I hope that when I start teaching, technology will have reached a point where students can have the most seamless learning experience with the most sophisticated technologies. Though there is some debate about what technologies may help or hinder the learning experience, it's a topic that I'm willing to discuss them to help expand my mind and learn new things!

    Nice to meet you Johnny! Don't be nervous and I am sure you will get used to this new environment. You experience with the old-fashioned projectors is definitely special because I haven't seen that for many years. Can you believe how fast techs move forward? I am sure this course is going to be a great experience for you to get your college life started.

WEB 2.0 Diigo has been an interesting tool for me. What I very much enjoy about the tool is just how easy it makes it to bookmark and annotate web pages. Before, I had to basically screenshot a webpage and paste it as a PDF file and use other software to annotate the screenshot. With Diigo, all of that is put into one streamlined app. Something that I find a little troublesome about Diigo comes purely from a technical perspective. When loading webpages with the Diigo extenstion, there is a noticeable increase in loading times due to having the Diigo overlay. I feel that this is relatively minor though, and can be remedied with optimization updates. Blogging is also quite new to me, and I have found that there is a lot more good than bad. Personally, I find it very helpful to have a platform to discuss the resources that we go over in class. TWITTER, WEB DESIGN, AND ADAPTIVE TECH Twitter for me has been an interesting experience. I already use Twitter on my own, and I follow lots of content creators, gaming industries, and political accounts. As such, my personal twitter feed is full of interesting interactions, so it's definitely refreshing to see a feed that is almost entirely focused on education and education technologies. I think that using Twitter has lots of benefits, like getting immediate updates on new technologies and direct interaction with educators. So far, I haven't really experienced many issues, despite constant notifications on my phone! The web design assignment was incredibly interesting and definitely a new experience for me. I enjoyed just how easy it was to use a third party service to create a fairly decent website with lots of information. I can see how it would be quite useful to a new educator. Teacher Productivity For this exercise, I visited my old community college's faculty directory to find the instructor page of one of my old professors. I found it quite difficult to find anything quite as detailed as the screenshot below on the high school level. I think that's because of the sheer amount of information that secondary schools have to insert in their websites under the districts rules. Here, there is the professor's contact information, as well as the classes that they are signed up to teach for the next few semesters.
